Antibiotics

Antibiotics are drugs that destroy bacteria, or prevent their multiplication. Some are broad spectrum, some are narrow spectrum, and each has a range of bacteria it is most effective against.

Methods of Action

Inhibit cell wall synthesis

These are bactericidal. Includes three main groups:

• Penicillins
• Cephalosporins
• Glycopeptides

Inhibit protein synthesis

These are bacteriostatic. Includes four main groups:

• Aminoglycosides
• Macrolides
• Chloramphenicol
• Tetracyclines

Inhibit nucleic acid synthesis

Antibiotics - nucleic acid synthesis inhibitors These are bacteriostatic. Includes five main groups:

• Quinolones
• Sulphonamides
• Rifampicin
• Trimethoprim
• Metronidazole
