There are two types of heart failure:
- Acute heart failure - this is a medical emergency.
- Chronic heart failure - this is not a medical emergency but in fact an incredibly common condition.
Generally, when talking about congestive heart failure (CHF) or congestive cardiac failure (CCF), what is being referred to is chronic heart failure.
