Definition

A premalignant condition of the oesophagus, often precipitated by reflux.

Epidemiology

Common.jpg

Present in about 10% of reflux sufferers, so pretty common. Probably there in about 1% of population.

Pathophysiology

It's lower oesophageal metaplasia, where the squamous cells become columnar. May convert to colonic or gastric cells – the colonic ones have a higher adenocarcinoma rate. It is considered a "premalignant" condition – one to be alert for. 10% of patients presenting with GO reflux have it.

Risk Factors

  • Reflux

That's about it.

Clinical Features

None. It generally causes no symptoms other than that you get from having reflux itself. If you start getting dysphagia, start to worry!
