This is the "compromise" position of gynaecological examination, where the doctor can feel, but not see. It's pretty Victorian, and pretty ineffective.

This is all about the weird and horrifying things that happen to the equally mysterious and frightening world of female sexual organs.

• Cervical Ailments
• Vaginal Indispositions

The things that don't really fit into those categories are urogynaecology, endometriosis, the menstrual cycle, its disorders plus when it ends i.e. the menopause.

Avoiding, and getting, pregnant

Contraception, fertility and early pregnancy are also important parts of gynae, even if the last one could strictly be obstetrics.

Obstetrics

This is all about care of the pregnant woman. Thus it is important to know about the big two areas: pregnancy and birth. Once these are known, its important to learn about the key things that can go wrong, such as:

Pregnancy:

• Infections in pregnancy
• Diabetes in pregnancy
• Antepartum haemorrhage
• Intrauterine growth retardation
• Pre-eclampsia

Birth:

• Slow progress in labour
• Foetal distress
• Prematurity
