It is important, in obstetrics to differentiate between those who are pregnant, and those who are simply fat. The clue is generally that obesity last for more than 9 months.

Once the mum gets past early pregnancy, it is worth knowing about the following:

• Normal pregnancy
• Prematurity
• Infections in pregnancy
• Diabetes in pregnancy
• Pre-eclampsia
• Antepartum haemorrhage
• Intrauterine growth retardation
