Enterobacteria

  • Found in the gut
  • Facultatively anaerobic
  • aka Coliforms
  • Gram negative bacilli

Escherichia Coli

Info

  • Intestinal commensal
  • Gram negative
  • Grow on MacConkey's agar (contains bile salts)
  • Lactase - pink colonies on MacConkey's

Disease

  • UTIs
  • Food poisoning
  • Meningitis in neonates

Treatment

  • Penicillin resistant usually
  • Otherwise, cephalosporins, trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin or aminoglycosides

Salmonella

About

  • Eggs + Chicken
  • Normal animal commensals
  • Do not produce pink colonies on MacConkey

Diseases

Treatment

  • Self limiting. Only treat if really bad – damage already done
  • If they have enteric fever, give ciprofloxacin

Shigella

  • Causes diarrhoea
  • Self limiting
  • Not usually too bad

Klebsiella

  • Hospital acquired
  • UTI
