- aka Coliforms
- Gram negative bacilli

Info
- Intestinal commensal
- Gram negative
- Grow on MacConkey's agar (contains bile salts)
- Lactase - pink colonies on MacConkey's
Disease
- UTIs
- Food poisoning
- Meningitis in neonates
Treatment
- Penicillin resistant usually
- Otherwise, cephalosporins, trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin or aminoglycosides
Salmonella
About
- Eggs + Chicken
- Normal animal commensals
- Do not produce pink colonies on MacConkey
Diseases
- Food poisoning
- Typhoid + paratyphoid
- Enteric fever
Treatment
- Self limiting. Only treat if really bad – damage already done
- If they have enteric fever, give ciprofloxacin
Shigella
- Causes diarrhoea
- Self limiting
- Not usually too bad
Klebsiella
- Hospital acquired
- UTI
