There are three main types of cancer that affect the lungs. They are:
Small cell lung cancer
About 20% of lung cancer is small cell lung cancer. It is almost always caused by smoking. It usually presents too late for surgical treatment, and is usually treated with chemotherapy.
Non small cell lung cancer
There are three types of non small cell lung cancer. They are:
- Squamous cell lung cancer - the most common type of lung cancer, found at the hilum, near the bronchi. Smoking related.
- Adenocarcinoma lung cancer
- Large cell lung cancer
Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a cancer, generally of the pleura, linked to asbestos exposure.
