These are the main investigations used in Gynaecology, from the vagina inwards...
Transvaginal ultrasound
Stick an ultrasound probe into the vagina, covered in lubricant and a condom.
Smear test
Scrape a swab off the cervix with a brush, and send it for testing. Tests for cervical cancer and is done on sexually active women between 25-65 every three years.
Colposcopy
A magnifying glass camera, that you put on the cervix, then view on a small screen.
Curettage
A sharp tool is inserted through the cervix and scrapes against the uterine wall in order to scrape off a sample to check for cell abnormalities.
Biopsy
Removal of tissue with an intrauterine device.
Hysteroscopy
Same as colposcopy, but on the uterus.
