Much of this is more in depth on the Neonatal examination page.

From the front, start at the top

  1. Sutures & Fontanelle
  2. Look for dismorphic features?
  3. Top of ears level with eyes?
  4. Check for soft and hard palate
  5. Listen to chest for murmurs
  6. Check for 10 fingers on hands, check for dysmorphism palmar crease
  7. Abdominal lumps
  8. Femoral pulse
  9. Testicles
  10. Check toes and look for clubbed foot (tallapies)

Flip over, and look at the back

  • Check for spine straightness
  • Base of the back, a dimple, hair patch or a birthmark where the skin has healed from a spine abnormality

Last cos it makes them scream

  • Check in the eyes for red reflex
  • Check hips
  • Guthrie test - done with a heel prick... this will definitely set them off if nothing else has.
