It is important, in obstetrics to differentiate between those who are pregnant, and those who are simply fat. The clue is generally that obesity last for more than 9 months.

Once the mum gets past early pregnancy, there's no going back, a baby is on the way. At this point, it is worth knowing about the following:

• Normal pregnancy
• Infections in pregnancy
• Diabetes in pregnancy
• Prematurity
• Antepartum haemorrhage
• Intrauterine growth retardation
